My favorite chapter

if love had a language
your eyes would be
my favorite chapter
the one I return to
when the world forgets
how to be gentle

they speak
without the burden of words
holding entire seasons
inside a single glance
a quiet alphabet of warmth
of storms survived
of dawns still waiting to happen

I have learned the shape of hope
in the way your gaze lingers
how silence becomes a sanctuary
when it is shared between us

every blink
turns another page
every smile hidden there
is a sentence I never tire of reading

and if one day
the rest of the story fades
if time scatters its pages
to the wind

I will always remember
the language your eyes
taught my heart
that love is not always spoken
but endlessly understood

  1. What’s possible to explore inside of us is in our hearts and our eyes.
Such incredibly thoughtful lines about seeing those eyes “storms survived” and “dawns still waiting to happen.”

Keep going back to the sentence you never tire of reading.
But only the readers can let the stories fade. So promise me this: hold on. Don’t let the pages scatter. No matter the cost.
This story is worth reading until the end. That is something my heart endlessly understands.

    • Michael, first, thank you for your lovely comment; you always have the most profound things to say. Secondly, thank you for reminding me that every page, even the difficult ones, still belongs to the story. I’ll keep returning to the sentence that calls me home, and I’ll keep holding on to finish the story.

  2. Jennifer, this is such a deep and touching poem. Written with self awareness and understanding of the moment – past, present, and future. Reading your poetry opens my eyes to what we are truly capable of as human beings. In order to love others, we must first love ourselves. Thank you for this reminder. 😊💛🌻

  3. That bit about silence becoming a sanctuary when shared you’ve captured something that poetry usually mangles. Most people try to fill silence with profundity, but you just let it be what it actually is between people who understand each other. And the idea that love is “endlessly understood” rather than spoken? That’s the whole romance novel industry just got put out of business.

  4. Jenn, I don’t know how you keep doing this, but every time I read your writing I end up sitting with it for a while.

You have such a beautiful way of putting feelings into words. I hope you never stop sharing them. Love you, friend. 🤍
