Endless poetry

your love does not fit
into neat stanzas
it refuses the cage
of a rigid rhyme scheme
it is the sudden
breathtaking metaphor
stumbled upon in the dark
the kind that makes the chest ache
with a quiet undeniable truth

you are the cadence
of a late-night thought
the deliberate pause
between heartbeats
where everything unsaid
finds its perfect resonant weight
I do not need
to count the syllables
of your laughter
or measure the meter
of your breath against mine
like the best lines ever written
you simply exist
raw
untamed
and beautifully alive

we are a living draft
written in the margins
of ordinary days
turning the mundane
into something sacred
no rules
no boundaries
just the effortless poetry

  1. This one stopped me. The poem itself refuses every cage it names — no neat stanzas, no forced rhyme — moving the way real love moves: sudden, a little breathless, found in the dark.
That line about the metaphor that makes the chest ache with quiet truth… that’s the one. I have felt this. But only recently as true love had been revealed in my life. Any previous iteration has been changed. When I reflect after experiencing true love, that ache is now revealed to be just pain. And my own desperation tried to convince me it was ache. But no.
And then the refusal to measure — no counting syllables of laughter, no checking the meter of breath. Just the recognition: you simply exist. Raw. Untamed. Beautifully alive.
“We are a living draft written in the margins of ordinary days.” God, yes. Turning the mundane sacred without permission or rules. That’s the kind of love that doesn’t perform. It just keeps rewriting the day until the ordinary becomes holy. Anointed. Unedited. Naked. Raw. Bare. No hiding.
    Thank you for this.

    • Sometimes it takes experiencing something true to give us the language to recognize what was never true before. I love what you said about desperation convincing you it was an ache. We can be so loyal to what hurts us that we mistake intensity for depth. And then something real arrives, and suddenly the old wounds don’t become less painful; they simply become more honest.

“Unedited” feels especially true to me. To be loved without having to translate, polish, perform, or hide, that might be one of the holiest forms of intimacy there is.

Thank you for sharing this. There’s something quietly transformative in realizing that what you once called love no longer gets to define what love means to you.

  2. Wow!! I so love the way you have so masterfully woven these words into images and feelings using poetry as the means of expressing your feelings and thoughts!!! So many beautiful phrases and stanzas – I especially loved the last stanza and the ending lines:
    “no rules
    no boundaries
    just the effortless poetry”

It is such an awesome feeling when poetry comes to you so effortless that it’s almost hard to keep up with the words that come.

    Bellissimo, Jennifer, Bellissimo!!!

  3. I really do think your best work is – like this poem – characterised by an absence of over-writing in an attempt to get everything down. The short lines and phrases, which match the natural rhythm of a person’s breathing, also allow space for what is not said, and what might be captured in longer lines and flowery sentence structures, but is in fact better left unsaid. In doing so, the reader has room in their heart and mind for metaphor and imagery to take effect. An excellent piece!

    • Thank you so much for such a thoughtful comment. I really appreciate your observation about the shorter lines and the space they create for what is left unsaid. That space is important to me; I often feel that a poem can become more powerful when it trusts the reader to enter into those silences and find their own meaning there. It means a great deal to know that this came through in the piece, and I’m especially grateful that you took the time to say it so beautifully.

      Thank you again!
